The Disco Tile Edge: A Geode Resin Art Trick I Almost Kept to Myself

I finish the edges of my geode pieces with disco tile, the same shimmery, iridescent material you'd find on a dance costume, not a resin supply list. It catches light from every single angle, so the piece never goes flat no matter where it sits in a room. Simple to do, and I haven't seen another resin artist doing it.

Why I almost didn't share it

Here's the honest part: for a minute, I sat on this one. When something works and nobody else is doing it, the instinct is to protect it, keep it close, let it be the thing that sets your work apart. I get that instinct, and I don't think it's wrong. If you have an idea you're not ready to see everywhere, keep it off the internet until you are. Once it's out, it's out.

But I decided this one was worth giving away. Not because it stopped mattering to me, but because I'd rather be the person who tried the weird thing and told everyone how, than the person who sat on a good idea out of fear someone else might use it too. So: use it. Put disco tile on your edges, tell people where you got the idea or don't, I'm not precious about it anymore.

What the reaction actually taught me

I didn't post that video expecting anything. It wasn't the most technical thing I've ever shown, it wasn't even the piece I was proudest of that week. It just happened to be the one that caught. That's the part worth sitting with: you don't always get to predict what resonates. Collectors respond to things you didn't think were the highlight. Other artists get inspired by the detail you almost didn't mention. The lesson isn't "post more," it's post the weird thing too, the technique that feels too simple or too strange to be worth showing. You genuinely do not know what's going to land until it lands.

Going with the flow sounds like a soft skill until it's the entire reason a piece finds an audience it never would have found otherwise.

Try it, or don't, either way

If you make resin art, disco tile along the edge is worth an afternoon of testing on a scrap piece. If you don't, maybe the bigger takeaway is the other one: the ideas you're precious about, protect them until you're ready. The ones you're not, let them go and see what happens.
